Coaching optimizes behavior

A good coach helps you plan better, communicate better, execute better. But behavior sits on top of patterns the way traffic sits on roads — optimize the driving all you like, the road still leads to the same wall.

Patterns need forensics

A pattern is a learned, automatic sequence with a trigger, a payoff, and a history. You can’t affirm it away; you have to trace it: where it started, what it protects you from, what it costs.

Why the distinction matters

If coaching hasn’t worked for you, it may not be the coach. It may be that you brought a pattern to a behavior intervention.

The One Action: Ask yourself: is my problem how I do things — or that I keep ending up in the same place?
